The following is a video transcript.

Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a criminal defense attorney. When I graduated from law school, I decided to clerk for a South Carolina circuit court judge. This not only allowed me to gain knowledge of the law, but also allowed me the opportunity to see a lot of lawyers—good and bad—practicing criminal law in our courts. After clerking with the South Carolina circuit judge, I decided to become a prosecutor. I believed this would give me the fastest path to trying cases and getting trial experience. While I was a prosecutor, I gained experience in many cases in South Carolina’s highest criminal trial courts.

Although I enjoyed being a prosecutor, my goal was always to return home to Murrells Inlet and practice criminal defense. So, in 1998, I returned to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and opened a criminal defense practice—right where I always envisioned myself being.

Over the last 21 years, I have successfully defended many different types of cases in all levels of South Carolina’s criminal trial courts, including magistrate municipal courts, circuit court, and federal court. I have successfully defended cases from something as simple as a noise ordinance or a traffic ticket, to a murder charge.

Joining U.S. LawShield

In 2017, I was approached by U.S. LawShield about being the Independent Program Attorney for South Carolina. Like I do in all important decisions, I did my homework to find out what the program was all about. As a small-town boy who grew up in the country, I was always an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Firearms were just naturally a part of my life. I’ve always supported our Second Amendment freedoms to keep and bear arms.

The opportunity to defend those who find themselves in legal troubles for having or using firearms in defense of their property, themselves, and their families or others naturally appealed to me. The greatest pleasure I get as the Independent Program Attorney for South Carolina is the opportunity to travel throughout the state speaking on our gun laws and trying to bring alive concepts such as “Stand Your Ground” and the “Castle Doctrine.” I really enjoy meeting people who wish to know the circumstances in which they can defend themselves or others. I would not get to interact with my fellow South Carolinians in such a manner, if not for U.S. LawShield!
