Fast Facts: South Carolina Passes Permitless Carry

  • HB 3594 being signed into law by Governor Henry McMaster authorizes permitless carry in South Carolina.
  • The law is effective immediately, but it’s crucial to understand that not everyone is authorized to carry, as there are still prohibited persons under state and federal law.
  • There are many prohibited places where carrying a firearm isn’t allowed, and this new law doesn’t change that.
  • Maintaining or obtaining a permit in South Carolina still holds significant benefits, including reciprocity with other states, exemption from certain federal laws, and skipping background checks when purchasing firearms.
  • U.S. Law Shield® members can speak with an Independent Program Attorney to understand how the new law applies to them and whether they should maintain or obtain a permit.
