Another Virginia City Seeks to Ban Certain Loaded Firearms in Public

Roanoke, VA city leaders recently considered a proposal to join other Virginia localities in prohibiting certain types of loaded firearms in public.

According to Mayor Sherman Lea, the plan is to prohibit loaded semi-automatic guns that hold 20 rounds or more from being carried in streets, parks and other places open to the public.

The ban would not apply to individuals possessing a valid concealed handgun permit.

If approved, Roanoke could join the handful of Virginia localities that already have the ban in place, including Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Norfolk, Richmond and several counties in northern Virginia.

The ban that specifically allows these cities and counties to enact such a ban can be found in § 18.2-287.4 of the Code of Virginia.

As early as October, the city could vote on whether to ask state lawmakers to add Roanoke to the list.

What are your thoughts on this course of action?
